The baulamycins are a series of structurally-novel antibiotics isolated from Streptomyces tempisquensis in early 2014. Found to inhibit siderophore biosynthesis, these partially-deoxygenated polyketides are active in the low micromolar range against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The development of a concise, enantioselective route towards Baulamycin A and B suggests the compelling possibility of further investigation into the bioactivity of these unique natural products.
