Research

Ecteinascidin 743 is an extremely potent cytotoxic agent currently under investigation as an anti-cancer agent. Its biological properties, coupled with the scarcity of the natural product from marine sources, make ET 743 a highly desirable target for synthesis. Previous syntheses have been reported independently by Corey, Fukuyama, Zhu and Danishefsky (formal).

As part of ongoing studies of the tetrahydroisoquinoline natural products in the Williams lab, I have been working towards a scalable and convergent total synthesis of ET 743. A novel synthetic route and new methods developed in the process will facilitate further biological studies involving ET 743 and analogues.
